Located in the heart of Taipei, National Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the surrounding park are easy to reach (just take the MRT Red Line to Sun Yat-sen Memorial stop, and you are right there), and offer a perfect blend of history, culture, and outdoor fun.
If you’re planning a trip to Taipei with kids, this is an amazing spot for the whole family to enjoy.
I’ve visited this place countless times over the years and have had many wonderful memories with my family. I’m excited to share why this place is perfect for families and why you’ll love it too!

National Dr Sun Yat-sen Memorial
Updates: The memorial hall is currently under renovation and will reopen to the public in 2026. The park surrounding it remains open.
Built in 1972 to honor Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, this grand building reflects the elegance of traditional Chinese palace architecture.
When you step inside, your eyes will be drawn to the grand statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. The seated statue is approximately 5.8 meters (19 feet) tall. Combined with its base, the entire structure reaches about 16 meters (52 feet) in height
Take a moment to notice the guards standing motionless on each side of the statue. They are incredibly well-trained, standing perfectly still with unwavering focus. It’s hard to believe they’re real until you see the precision of their movements during the changing ceremony.
The changing of the guard ceremony is on the hour from 9 AM to 5 PM (the duration is about 10 minutes) —you’ll be captivated by their flawless movements and stunning rifle drills, perfected through rigorous training. I remember being mesmerized by the guards’ precise motions and attention to every tiny detail. I’m sure you will be, too.
In addition, the memorial hall features exhibits showcasing historical artifacts and stories connected to the creation of the R.O.C. If you have an interest in history, you’re sure to find them fascinating.
Beyond history, the Memorial Hall is a lively cultural hub. The 3,000-seat concert hall often hosts world-class performances and awards, and the surrounding exhibition rooms feature art and displays that change throughout the year.
As you walk around the outside hallways surrounding the memorial hall, you’ll often see groups of young people from local high schools or college dance clubs practicing their routines.

Sun Yat-Sen Park
The park surrounding the memorial hall covers about 14 hectares (35 acres), providing a spacious area for relaxation and recreation.
The park has lots of open spaces, perfect for playing outdoor games like frisbee and badminton. Shaded walking paths provide a peaceful spot for a stroll or jog. There’s also a lake with a charming traditional bridge.
If you visit in the morning, you’ll see various groups practicing tai chi and dance.
When I was little, my parents would take my brother and me here to fly kites, blow bubbles, and play frisbee or badminton. The wide-open space was perfect for running around, and we’d spend hours in the fresh air, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
Fast forward to my adult years. When my son was a toddler, I often brought him to Sun Yat-Sen Park to release his boundless energy. The open space was perfect for him to run around, explore, and enjoy the fresh air.

Take in the View of Taipei 101
One of the highlights of visiting Sun Yat-Sen Memorial is the view of Taipei 101.
From the park, you can see this iconic skyscraper standing tall in the distance—there are many great spots to take photos of the Taipei 101.

Conclusion
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial is the kind of place where you can spend hours together as a family—whether you’re learning about the history of the Republic of China, enjoying activities in the open space, or snapping photos of the Taipei 101, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
