What It’s Like to Visit Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei (華山文創)

If you’re visiting Taipei and looking for a place where you can slow down and explore at your own pace, Huashan 1914 Creative Park is worth considering.

You don’t really need a plan here. You can just walk around to take photos, step into an exhibition if something catches your eye, check out the creative design shops, or take a break at a cafe.

What I like most about Huashan is how it blends history with creativity. You’re in these old factory buildings, but they’re now filled with art, design, and all kinds of creative energy.

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you want to know before your visit.

Quick Take: Is It Worth Visiting?

Huashan 1914 Creative Park is definitely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy seeing how Taipei’s older spaces blend with new energy.

It used to be a wine factory, and you can still feel that industrial, historic atmosphere as you walk through the space. The buildings are now filled with exhibitions, design shops, and creative studios, which gives the whole area a completely different feel.

You can spend a couple of hours here, walking around at your own pace, stepping into an exhibition or a shop if something catches your eye, or taking a break at a café. It works especially well as a flexible stop between other attractions.

The experience does depend on what exhibitions are happening at the time, so make sure to check ahead.

How to Plan Your Visit to Huashan 1914 Creative Park

Huashan 1914 Creative Park works best when you treat it as a flexible stop, rather than a fixed destination with a set plan.

You can spend about 1 to 3 hours here, depending on whether you visit exhibitions or simply walk around, browse the shops, and take a break at a café. If something catches your interest, you might stay longer.

Before you go, it’s a good idea to check what exhibitions are currently on. The overall atmosphere and experience can feel quite different depending on what’s happening at the time.

When I visited in the summer of 2025, one of the main exhibitions was themed around Doraemon. You could see the characters everywhere, from displays to banners across the park.

The atmosphere was so lively and colorful, and it drew lots of Doraemon fans and families with kids.

Transformation of an Old Winery

Huashan 1914 Creative Park was originally built in 1914 as a winery during the Japanese colonial era, producing sake and other alcoholic drinks.

After World War II, it continued operating under the Taiwanese government, mainly producing rice wine. The factory remained active for decades before being shut down in the 1980s.

In the 1990s, artists began using the abandoned buildings for exhibitions and performances, eventually leading to its transformation into a creative space. After restoration, the site officially reopened in 2007 as Huashan 1914 Creative Park.

Today, the preserved factory buildings have been repurposed into a hub for art, design, and cultural events.

What to Expect at Huashan 1914

What you get out of Huashan 1914 depends a lot on what’s happening that day and how you choose to spend your time there.

Explore exhibitions

The exhibitions are one of the main reasons to visit, but they vary quite a bit. Some are small and quick to walk through, while others are more interactive or visually engaging.

Because of this, your experience at Huashan will feel very different from one visit to another.

I highly recommend checking Huashan 1914’s website for current exhibitions before your visit. Here is the link to the exhibition info page.

Although the page is only in Chinese, the promotional photos of the exhibitions (such as the photos shown below) often include English.

The photos below are from an “upside down” exhibition our family attended several years ago when my son was a toddler.

Check Out Creative Shops

Even if you’re not planning on seeing any exhibitions, there are still plenty of unique shops for you to explore.

These shops offer a variety of items, including handmade crafts, locally designed fashion, quirky home décor, and creative souvenirs that you won’t find in typical tourist spots.

You can also discover specialty stores featuring artisan goods, such as stationery, eco-friendly products, or art supplies.

Many of the shops highlight Taiwanese creativity and craftsmanship, making them perfect places to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts or keepsakes.

There are also pop-up shops. When I visited in the summer of 2025, I came across this cute sushi plush shop. Just look at how adorable these plush toys are!

Enjoy Open Space and Atmosphere

What makes Huashan stand out, in my opinion, is the overall atmosphere. The combination of historic buildings and open space gives it a different feel from the more crowded parts of Taipei.

If you’re traveling with kids, the open areas are especially useful. It’s also a place where you can slow down, walk around without a plan, and take beautiful photos.

Nearby Attractions

There are a few popular attractions nearby that you can include in your itinerary.

Taipei Hope Plaza Farmers Market (希望廣場)

This farmers’ market is open from 10AM to 6PM on the weekends and is just a few minutes’ walk from Huashan 1914. If you’re in the area on the weekend and want to explore local goods, be sure to check it out! (See it on Google Maps).

Next to the farmers’ market, there is a park with a large playground. I used to take my son to the playground when he was a toddler. He loved the slides very much!

Fu Hang Soil Milk (阜杭豆漿)

Located inside Huashan Market near Shandao Temple MRT Station, this iconic eatery is known for its freshly made soy milk, crispy sesame flatbreads, and savory egg-filled crepes.

If you wake up super early, you can grab breakfast at this spot before visiting Huashan 1914. It’s open from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and closed on Mondays.

It’s a favorite among locals and tourists, so be prepared for a long line. The delicious, traditional Taiwanese breakfast is well worth the wait!

DON DON DONKI

If you are into Japanese goods, another nearby spot worth visiting is Don Don Donki, the Japanese discount store within walking distance of Huashan 1914.

Known for its wide variety of Japanese products, including snacks, cosmetics, home goods, and quirky items, it’s a fun place to explore if you’re looking for unique finds.

The store is open late (from 9AM to 11PM), so it’s perfect for a quick shopping trip after your visit to the park.

Final Thoughts

Huashan 1914 Creative Park offers a different way to experience Taipei. Instead of following a checklist, it’s a place where you can slow down, walk around, and see what catches your attention.

I would recommend it if you want something more flexible in your itinerary, or a break from the more crowded parts of the city. It’s not about seeing everything, but about enjoying the space at your own pace.

I hope this post has given you a clear picture of what to expect and inspired you to check it out on your next trip to Taipei!
